RESEARCH / INFORMATION SKILLS
A major goal of the Library Media Program is for students to learn the skills necessary for living in an information-rich society. An information literate person knows how to:
- Access information efficiently and effectively
- Evaluate information critically and competently
- Use information effectively and creatively
When possible, the library media specialist will collaborate with teachers to ensure that students have opportunities to learn and practice research/information skills throughout their years at Florence Sawyer School.
How Parents Can Help
Helping students at home in the 21st Century often means using resources on the Internet. The information available on the World Wide Web offers more than has ever existed in the past; however, new issues arise because of the technology involved. Too much information can often be overwhelming and students need help in defining what information they need and in selecting the appropriate information. A useful site for parents and their children to work together is "The New 'Homework' Parents and Students Together on the Web": http://www.fno.org/feb97/teach.html. This website provides information and activities that parents and their children can do together!
